Perched along the Oceanside coastline, Mission Pacific Beach Resort blends contemporary coastal design with relaxed California luxury. Recently named the #1 Resort in the Continental U.S. (Travel + Leisure 2024), it offers sweeping ocean views, a lively rooftop scene, and an adult-oriented atmosphere. Earlier this year, we stayed nearby at The Seabird Resort, its family-friendly sister property, and were curious to see how Mission Pacific compares. This visit gave us a chance to experience the more refined side of Oceanside and see whether it lives up to the hype.

Booking & Cost

We redeemed 25,000 Hyatt points for one night in late September. Standard award rates typically range from 20,000 to 25,000 points depending on the season. As Globalists, we were upgraded to a Sanctuary Studio Ocean View, with resort and parking fees waived, welcome drinks at check-in, and complimentary breakfast at Piper.

Cash rates for this room type were around $800 per night, but when factoring in the waived fees, breakfast, and parking, the total value of our stay was closer to $1,000. That translates to roughly 4.0 cents per point, an excellent return for a beach getaway in Southern California.

Location & Check In

We arrived to check in around 4 p.m. and handed off our car key to the valet. Self-service parking is available at the lot across the street, but it requires you to pay at midnight to extend the parking ticket. Since our reservation was made with points, both the parking fee and resort fee were waived.

The staff warmly greeted us with welcome drinks and upgraded our room to the Sanctuary Studio with Ocean View. We received an information packet detailing all the hotel amenities and Globalist benefits. While waiting for our room, we explored the cozy lobby.

Compared to The Seabird Resort, Mission Pacific’s decor is less nautical and more upscale, fitting its adult-only property status. The lobby is heavily decorated with driftwood furnishings and linen fabrics, true to its oceanic escape identity. Though smaller, it offers ample seating and table space for lounging and working. There’s even a refreshment corner with a water station, a cork board with daily tidal information, and dog treats!

Room | Sanctuary Studio Accessible Tub Ocean View

The Sanctuary Studio room is spacious and vibrant, with a soothing color palette reflecting the coastal setting. Upon entering, there is a seating area with a small coffee table in front of the TV. A large closet and storage space for luggage are positioned near the entrance. The TV console is stocked with drinks, snacks, and a coffee machine. Large windows and the balcony allow plenty of sunlight and offer a nice view of the ocean and boardwalk.

A unique feature of the room is the reading nook next to the windows. A large cushion lounging chair and soft lighting fixtures create the perfect spot to relax.

The large king bed comes with night lamps, nightstands, and charging stations. The mattress, bedding, and pillows are extremely comfortable, typical of Hyatt properties, ensuring a good night’s sleep. Control panels for the window curtains are next to the bed, though they were difficult to navigate. Earplugs are provided on the bedside table in case of nighttime noise, but we had no issues despite concerts and a surfing competition outside the hotel.

The room’s design is practical for a beach resort. Towel hooks are by the entrance door and on the balcony, and the wooden flooring is durable for wet and sandy feet. The wide door, lowered thermostat and light switches, and lowered peephole and door latch reflect the thoughtful design of this accessible room.

Bathroom

Being an accessible room, the bathroom layout differs from the standard Sanctuary Studio. Behind a large sliding barn door, it is designed with ample space, an accessible shower, and an accessible tub. Bathrobes, sandals, and extra towels on a movable rack are provided. The shower and vanity are stocked with signature Apothia amenities.

Breakfast

As a Globalist, I was excited to try and review the breakfast offerings at different Hyatt properties. The hotel shares its breakfast dining area with The Seabird Resort at Piper restaurant. During our previous stay at The Seabird, we ordered à la carte. This time, we tried the breakfast buffet, and it did not disappoint!

The buffet features high-quality proteins like brisket and salmon, along with international options such as miso soup with various condiments and Menemen (traditional Turkish eggs and tomatoes). There were also standard offerings like cheese and ham, pastries, and fruits. A chef takes omelet orders, but our favorite items were the French toast and waffles with strawberries and Nutella. Drip coffee and made-to-order coffee drinks are available.

Amenities & Extras

As the top-ranked resort in Continental U.S., Mission Pacific offers a full array of amenities, including a Michelin-starred restaurant (Valle), a vibrant rooftop bar with a live DJ, and the iconic “Top Gun” house, now a pie shop. The hotel also provides a fully equipped 24/7 gym and a rooftop swimming pool next to the bar.

The resort fee covers useful amenities such as reusable water bottles, free beach equipment, free surfboard rentals, storage for surfboards and bikes, and various discounts on rentals, classes, and museum tickets. These amenities are similar to those offered at The Seabird Resort, and a full list can be found on the website. We enjoyed a sunny morning at the beach with the hotel-provided equipment from the Rambler.

Final Verdict

Mission Pacific Beach Resort lives up to its reputation as one of the best resorts in the U.S., offering stylish accommodations, generous Globalist perks, and an unbeatable beachfront location. Between the upgraded Sanctuary Studio, waived fees, and a breakfast spread that rivals top European Hyatts, this stay was both luxurious and an incredible value at 25,000 points.
