Starlux Airlines Business Class Review: Los Angeles to Taipei

Starlux Airlines has quickly become known as Taiwan’s boutique luxury carrier, offering a refined business class on the A350-900 from Los Angeles to Taipei. With exceptional cabin design, curated dining, and attentive service, this flight represents one of the best Alaska miles redemptions available today.

Starlux Business Class

Some flights remind you why we collect points in the first place. Starlux has been hyped as Taiwan’s “boutique luxury airline,” and after my 14.5-hour flight from Los Angeles to Taipei, I finally understood why. From the moment I stepped into the futuristic A350 cabin to the final approach into Taoyuan, every detail felt intentional, polished, and quietly exceptional.

After being impressed by Condor’s new business class earlier this year, I was curious how Starlux would compare. It turned out to be a completely different league, more refined, more attentive, and easily one of my favorite long-haul flights to date.

Cost & Booking

I initially booked an economy award ticket for 37,500 Alaska miles through the Alaska portal. Currently, Starlux award seats are only available through Starlux’s own program or Alaska Mileage Plan. Starlux tends to release a generous number of last-minute seats to Alaska, so it is worth checking the award calendar close to departure.

About a month before my flight, I noticed a few business seats had opened up. I upgraded my booking to the business cabin for an additional 37,500 miles, bringing the total to 75,000 miles plus about $49 in taxes. Considering the retail price of around $4,000, this redemption worked out to roughly 5.3 cents per mile, an exceptional value for such a premium product.

Check-In & Lounge

Check-in started on the Starlux app, where I was able to choose my seat and meal ahead of time. Reviews online suggested row 5 for the best window alignment, so I picked 5A. The app interface was clean and modern, setting the tone for what was to come.

At LAX, the check-in area was calm despite several Taipei-bound departures that evening. The ground staff were polite and efficient, providing a paper lounge voucher since Starlux is not yet part of Oneworld’s full membership.

Snoopy theme lounge pass

The boarding pass itself was a small delight, a Snoopy-themed design complete with spacecraft motifs. It immediately added personality and hinted at the airline’s playful, high-design aesthetic.

The Oneworld Business Lounge was sleek and spacious, though the food options were underwhelming. The DIY noodle bar was fun but average in taste, and the buffet selection lacked quality choices. The bar area was well-staffed, and the lounge design itself was a clear step above most U.S. lounges, but I still preferred the Air France Lounge at LAX from my Condor flight for its food and quieter ambiance.

Boarding & First Impressions

Boarding began right on time and moved efficiently. The walk from the lounge to the gate took about ten minutes, something to keep in mind for anyone departing from this terminal.

The moment I entered the A350 cabin, I felt transported into a modern spacecraft. The metallic finishes, muted lighting, and geometric surfaces created an atmosphere that was both futuristic and calming.

Flight attendants greeted every passenger personally, offering hot towels and confirming meal selections and cocktail orders (the cocktail list is the best in the sky!). Pajamas, water preferences, and pre-departure drinks were all handled before takeoff. The attention to detail was remarkable, and the crew’s warmth never felt forced or mechanical.

The Seat

Starlux’s business class is exceptional in both comfort and design. The layout mirrors what Condor uses on its A330neo, but Starlux has refined it to perfection. The cabin felt like it was in a space ship with each seat looking like a space capsule. The sliding door divider on each seat effectively upgrades the seat to a suite. The suite felt incredibly spacious, and even when I stretched out completely, my feet didn’t reach the ottoman.

Each seat was thoughtfully prepared upon boarding with a soft blanket, amenity kit, and slippers neatly arranged by the console. Pajamas were provided once the attendant confirmed each passenger’s preferred size. These small touches added to the sense of care and personalization that defined the entire experience.

There were multiple storage areas: a large compartment for headphones and bottled water, a flat space under the table for smaller items, and a magazine rack under the screen. The wireless charger, universal outlet, and intuitive seat controls were all easy to access.

The lighting setup was particularly thoughtful. Between the reading light, the lamp near the console, and the adjustable ambient glow, it was easy to create the right atmosphere for work, dining, or sleep. The materials all felt premium to the touch, and the cabin cleanliness was impeccable. Every corner, surface, and crevice looked freshly detailed. It’s rare to find a business cabin this pristine.

Dining

Meal service began shortly after takeoff. I opted for the Western menu, starting with a cauliflower coconut soup and a beautifully plated appetizer. The drink menu featured a list of unique cocktails and mocktails. I chose a tea and citrus gin cocktail, it was incredibly light and refreshing. Bread was served with olive oil, balsamic and butter.

The main course featured lobster in a rich, buttery sauce, something I never expected to see executed so well in the air. The portion was generous, and the flavors were well-balanced. Dessert followed with ice cream, fruit, and Taiwanese black tea, which was fragrant and perfectly brewed.

Drinks and snacks were provided throughout the flight. Flight attendants would work around with snack baskets and take menu orders at all times. I was unfortunately too full to try the noodle soup.

A few hours before landing, breakfast service began with an Asian set that turned out to be the highlight of the entire meal experience. The congee came with all the classic condiments, along with eggplant and radish cakes. It felt authentic and comforting, especially after a long night’s rest.

The overall meal quality was excellent, easily ranking among my top in-flight dining experiences. The service pace was relaxed and precise, and I appreciated the second round of hot towels after the meal.

Sleep & Entertainment

After dinner, I went to the lavatory, and by the time I returned, my seat had been converted into a bed with a mattress pad, blanket, and pillow. It was such a thoughtful touch that it almost felt like a scene change, one moment dining under soft cabin light, the next stepping into a cozy private suite.

The bedding was comfortable, and the cabin temperature and humidity were perfectly balanced. I slept soundly for several hours, waking up surprisingly refreshed for a 14-hour flight. It is easily one of the best nights of sleep I have had in the sky.

The entertainment screen was crisp and large, with an excellent selection of films. The only real drawback was the lack of Wi-Fi on this route. For most passengers, that will not matter much, but it is worth noting if you plan to work or message during the flight.

Closing Thoughts

This was one of those flights that reminded me why collecting points is worth the effort. Starlux manages to deliver an experience that feels modern, elegant, and deeply personal. The design is gorgeous, the food is excellent, and the crew’s warmth takes it to another level.

Redeeming 75,000 Alaska miles for a $4,000 ticket worked out to over 5 cents per point in value, an incredible deal for such a polished product. I would happily buy miles again just to experience Starlux business class on another long-haul route.

For travelers heading to Asia, this is a redemption worth chasing. Starlux is not just a new airline making headlines. It is one that genuinely earns the hype.
