Hotel Review: Hyatt Regency Amsterdam

Overview

Nestled in a quiet yet central area of Amsterdam, Hyatt Regency Amsterdam offers a peaceful retreat while remaining close to the vibrant city streets. It was our first stop on a two-week summer journey through Europe in 2024, and we chose to stay here for the entirety of our time in the city. Despite the busy F1 race weekend, we were able to book the hotel at a reasonable rate. As a bonus, this marked our first Hyatt experience as Globalist members, and we were eager to see how the perks would enhance our stay!

Check In

Upon arriving at Hyatt Regency Amsterdam around noon, we were warmly greeted by the hotel chauffeur, who helped with our luggage and guided us to reception. As Globalist members, we had a designated check-in, ensuring a smooth process. We inquired about an upgrade, but with the city buzzing from the F1 weekend, availability was limited. However, we were still upgraded from a 1 King Bed room to one with a view and Regency Club access, though the latter is already a perk for Globalists. Nonetheless, we were excited to see the canal from our hotel room.

The lobby perfectly balances luxury and comfort while emphasizing environmental sustainability. Inviting seating areas filled with plush chairs and sofas stretch out before you, framed by abundant greenery that enhances the natural feel of the space. A striking green wall and hanging plants from the ceiling highlight the hotel’s commitment to sustainability, creating an eco-conscious ambiance. This thoughtful layout not only reflects the hotel’s focus on environmental responsibility but also makes the lobby feel spacious and cozy, offering a warm, eco-friendly welcome as soon as you step inside.

At the rear side of the lobby, the lounging area is a chic, inviting space featuring a billiards table, plush leather seating, and warm earthy tones. The lounge is conveniently next to the Mama Makan Bar as well as an outdoor terrace, making it easy to grab a drink and enjoy the fresh air. Whether you’re unwinding after a day of exploring or taking in the vibrant energy of the city, this lounge blends modern elegance with a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.

Room | 1 King Bed with View & Club Access

The room offers a spacious and functional layout. Upon entering, you’re greeted with a sleek entryway leading to an open living space. The king-sized bed, with its bedside lamps, is backed by a stunning floral accent piece that adds a touch of sophistication to the room’s minimalist design. The room also features practical furniture such as a large flat-screen TV, a writing desk with a round mirror, a red upholstered chair, a cozy armchair with an ottoman, and a small side table.

The highlight of the room is the expansive window view, offering a serene view of the canal and surrounding greenery, allowing natural light to pour in and brighten the space. Despite the room’s functional features, the simple furnishings and decor might leave design enthusiasts wanting more, especially in contrast to the vibrant lobby.

Bathroom

The bathroom is discreetly tucked behind a sliding door to the right of the entryway. It’s modern, and highly functional, featuring a spacious walk-in shower with both rainfall and handheld showerheads. A large, softly lit mirror above the ample vanity counter adds elegance, while neutral tiles and subtle accents create a calming atmosphere. Opposite the vanity, the toilet area is enclosed by a coated mirror and door for privacy.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served at Mama Makan, an Indonesian restaurant next to the lobby. As Globalist members, we enjoyed daily access to the full buffet, with unlimited drinks and made-to-order items like personalized omelets. We particularly enjoyed the English breakfast tea. The buffet features a wide selection of fresh fruits, cold cuts, cheeses, pastries, typical breakfast dishes, and traditional Indonesian items for a unique twist.

Service is top-notch, with staff ensuring the buffet is well-stocked and drinks are promptly refilled. The wide selection of healthy and filling breakfast options, along with exceptional service, made for a perfect start to each day.

Amenities

The amenities at Hyatt Regency Amsterdam offer a well-rounded experience. On the ground floor, you’ll find a 24-hour gym equipped with everything needed for a full workout (the dumbbells are definitely not heavy enough for a regular gym goer). Just below the gym, there’s a wellness area featuring a steam room, sauna, and showers.

As Globalist members, we also enjoyed access to the Regency Club, a spacious lounge overlooking the main street. The club serves soft drinks throughout the day, with a daily happy hour from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. During our visit, happy hour included a wide selection of alcohol, along with small bits and desserts. While the club serves a continental breakfast, the staff recommended the more extensive selection downstairs.

Activities

Hyatt Regency Amsterdam is perfectly situated for exploring the city, with attractions like the Rembrandt House and NEMO Science Museum just a short walk away (~1 mile). One of our favorite activities was renting a boat at the nearby Mokumboot Station, where we spent two hours navigating the picturesque canals of Amsterdam. Public transportation is easily accessible, with a subway and tram station conveniently located right outside the hotel. While we love discovering new cities through morning runs, the roads here aren’t particularly runner-friendly. Fortunately, Vondelpark is only about 1.5 miles away, offering a lovely destination for a refreshing jog.

Every aspect of our stay contributed to a restful and enjoyable experience, making this hotel an ideal choice for anyone seeking both comfort and convenience in Amsterdam.
